Gqeberha’s hospitality and tourism landscape has welcomed a new addition with the official opening of The Capital Boardwalk on Thursday, 28 May – a R270 million development that introduces the city’s first “aparthotel” concept and further strengthens its position as a growing coastal destination.
Located within the popular Boardwalk precinct in Summerstrand, The Capital Boardwalk combines hotel accommodation, serviced apartments, conferencing facilities, dining experiences, and entertainment offerings in one integrated destination. The property features 145 rooms and apartments, including studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as luxury penthouses.
Additional facilities include a conference centre, co-working spaces with virtual meeting rooms, a restaurant and bar, a fully equipped gym, laundry facilities, flexible housekeeping options, leisure areas, high-speed Wi-Fi, secure parking, and 24-hour reception and security services. Accessibility has also been prioritised, with specially designed accommodation available for guests with mobility challenges.
The project has delivered a notable economic boost to the region, with more than 500 direct and indirect jobs being created during the construction phase. An estimated 170 to 200 permanent positions is also expected to support the property’s ongoing operations.
From the likes of the Sakura Girls welcoming guests on arrival, to a breathtaking lollipop aerial performance and dazzling mirror dancers lighting up the space by Oriental Fire Entertainment and well-renowned Micasa, performers graced the stage at the grand opening with entertainment areas set up for guests.
Speaking at the opening, The Capital Hotels, Apartments & Resorts Chief Executive Officer Marc Wachsberger highlighted the significance of the investment for both the hospitality sector and the broader community. “The opening of The Capital Boardwalk reflects our commitment to creating spaces that support local economic growth, develop talent, and contribute positively to the communities in which we operate,” he said.
